A pretty mahogany astral glazed display cabinet or bookcase, with an attractive original escutcheon, lock and key, 2/3 shelves, sitting on (possibly earlier) bracket feet, good quality wood showing lovely grain and colour, from Brudenell House, Quainton, Bucks (see provenance below).
A couple of surface splits to the top (which you can only see from certain angles) and by two of the hinges on one side (see photos), but otherwise in very good condition for the age.
(Provenance:
Brudenell House is a large, beautiful Grade II listed country house and was originally built in the sixteenth century and then added to in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
Until 1962 it was the church rectory in Quainton. It was then bought by my oldest friend Julian's grandmother (Helena Wright, pioneer of birth control and family planning) and then passed down to her son, Beric, in 1982, when I first met Julian in our early teens.
I lived down the road in a very busy house, so I spent many hours and days escaping to Brudenell House!
After Beric passed away in 2008, the family finally sold Brudenell House in 2011 in order to downsize to a more manageable house.
This piece has been in dry storage since then.)
